Congaree National Park: located in central South Carolina. There is no fee to enter the park. We stopped by the park on our way back from a vacation on Hilton Head Island, SC. A day trip was the perfect amount of time to see and do what we wanted to do.
Accommodations
If you do wish to stay at the park overnight, the only option is camping. There is not an on site lodge or housing. Check out the NPS website here to see camping options.
Eating
Bring your own food! There isn’t any on site restaurants.
Hiking
Our main goal at Congaree was hiking the trails. Congaree has several trails to choose from based on what distance or difficulty level you are looking for. Check out the trail guide for descriptions and a map of each trail.
We started on the boardwalk trail which is a nice easy walk around and you can see a lot from the boardwalk.
After walking the boardwalk, we headed to the river trail which is a remote trail in the park. The trail was not well cleared and there were several big trees that had fallen across the trail, which is to be expected from a remote trail. Just about every step we took we were walking into spider webs. We made it quite a ways down the trail before making the decision to turn around and not go around the river loop. This was only because the trail seemed to be getting worse and there were more huge trees to climb over that we could physically not get over.
Note: Before your visit, check the NPS website for current flood alerts.
